Why
Tom's Guide and TechRadar each rated the PowerDetect 4 out of 5 and Homes & Gardens 4.5. TechRadar found "The suction power and features more than justify the price," and a TechRadar editor who has tested many vacuums says it "offers the best outright cleaning performance of any vacuum I've used." It senses dirt, floor type and room edges, bends at the wand to reach under furniture, and empties itself into its base. The trade-off is bulk: it's top-heavy and can't stand on its own. The cheaper Levoit LVAC-300 got 3.5 stars from TechRadar and 4 from Homes & Gardens, which points back to the Shark as "a more powerful and nimble vacuum that performed better on tests." Shark's own Clean & Empty (BU3521) got the same 4 stars from Tom's Guide, is lighter and also self-empties, but runs 40 minutes and has no bending wand. Splurge if you have carpets or pets and want the sensors and the bending wand; save if you have a small home with mostly hard floors.

Tom's Guide rated it 4 out of 5, the same as the PowerDetect: "a great performer" that is "notably lighter to handle than the majority of stick vacuums I've tested," easy to carry up stairs one-handed, and it self-empties like the PowerDetect. On a week-dirty carpet it lifted ingrained hair, and none wrapped around the brushroll. The downsides: it's "rather noisy" (78 dB in Boost), it has a small onboard bin and 40-minute runtime, it can't stand on its own, and it lacks the PowerDetect's bending wand and edge sensing. Tom's Guide calls it the pick "if all you need is a lightweight cordless vacuum that offers a powerful, efficient clean, and self-empties."

TechRadar rated it 3.5 out of 5 for its "strong performance on hard floors, nippy maneuvering and excellent edge cleaning," but found "Fine dust is a challenge on carpets" and hair tangling around the roller. Homes & Gardens gave it 4 stars: "I wasn't expecting it to clean this well at such a low price point." It listed "No hair wrap" as a pro, so the testers disagree on tangling. There's no auto suction, dirt sensing or auto-empty base, and it's much lighter than the Shark.

Common questions
Does the Shark PowerDetect really pick up in reverse?
Partly. TechRadar credits its redesigned floorhead with sucking up debris on the pull-back "rather than pooling it up." Tom's Guide didn't notice "any major difference from other vacuums I've tested," and Homes & Gardens found reverse pickup "not quite as strong as advertised."
Is the Shark PowerDetect heavy?
It's on the heavy side. TechRadar calls it "on the taller and heavier side for a stick vacuum" and lists it as heavier and bulkier than Shark's Detect Pro, and Tom's Guide found the top section "quite substantial and a bit heavy to wield." It also can't stand up on its own.
