Is the Dyson Gen5detect Worth It?

Tom's Guide (4.5 out of 5) and Homes & Gardens (5 out of 5) loved the Gen5detect. Tom's Guide's reviewer says "Now that I've used this, I can't go back to anything else," and Homes & Gardens found it "outshines virtually all others you could buy." TechRadar gave it 4 stars and named the catch: "Cheaper models offer similar cleaning performance." The strongest of those is the Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty, which costs far less: Tom's Guide and TechRadar each gave it 4 stars, and Homes & Gardens 4.5. In TechRadar's side-by-side test the Dyson was "the better quality vacuum" and easier to steer, with a laser head that shows dust on hard floors, while the Shark was "better at cleaning edges and chunky spillages" and adds an auto-empty base. All three testers found the Dyson heavy. Splurge if you have lots of hard floor and want the laser and the better build; save if you want the same everyday cleaning plus an auto-empty base.

Tom's Guide and TechRadar each rated it 4 out of 5, and Homes & Gardens 4.5. It senses dirt, floor type and room edges and raises suction to match. On hard floors Tom's Guide found it "did a great job cleaning," and none of its pets' long hair wrapped around the brushroll. In TechRadar's head-to-head it matched the Gen5detect for everyday cleaning, did better at edges and big debris, and ran 67 minutes in Eco to the Dyson's 75. The downsides: it's top-heavy and "Not as maneuverable as a Dyson" (TechRadar), it can't stand up on its own, Tom's Guide says its floorhead sensors need regular cleaning, and Homes & Gardens found reverse pickup "not quite as strong as advertised."

TechRadar rated it 3.5 out of 5 for its "strong performance on hard floors, nippy maneuvering and excellent edge cleaning," but it "Struggles on thick carpets" and TechRadar found hair tangling around the roller. Homes & Gardens gave it 4 stars and listed "No hair wrap" as a pro, so the testers disagree on tangling; its cons include "Weak performance with large debris on hard floors." There's no auto suction, dirt sensing or laser head. Homes & Gardens itself points to the Shark PowerDetect as "a more powerful and nimble vacuum that performed better on tests."
