America's Test Kitchen rated the de Buyer Recommended: "Pricey but very solidly built, this nearly all-metal mandoline impressed us with its ability to make perfectly even slices and julienne," and its spring-loaded pusher kept hands away from the blade. But "Its main slicing blade has microserrations that leave visible lines on slices," and "it can’t slice foods paper-thin." ATK's Best Overall, the Super Benriner, earned full marks for performance and versatility and slices from paper-thin to chunky for a fraction of the price, though its hand guard is nearly useless.

America's Test Kitchen's Best Overall mandoline, rated higher than the de Buyer for performance and versatility and equal for sharpness. "Its razor-sharp blades can handle even the toughest produce, and it can be set in a seemingly infinite range of thicknesses, effortlessly churning out paper-thin or chunky slices and julienne." It's a simple plank you can hook over a bowl. The catch: "Just don’t expect much from its hand guard, which is pretty much useless." A cut-resistant glove is worth buying with it. ATK didn't test long-term durability.
