Why
TechRadar rated the V15 Detect 4.5 out of 5 ("an outstanding vacuum, and well worth considering") and Homes & Gardens gave it 5: "It cleans flawlessly on every surface." TechRadar's former Homes Editor has used one at home for nearly two years and reports cleaning powers "with no signs of fading." Its weak spots are weight in handheld mode and a trigger you have to hold down. Both outlets also reviewed the Shark PowerDetect Clean & Empty, which costs less: TechRadar gave it 4 stars and Homes & Gardens 4.5, and the same TechRadar editor says it "offers the best outright cleaning performance of any vacuum I've used, including all the Dyson models." She still prefers the Dyson, because "Dyson's laser lights are far more effective than Shark's headlamps" and it steers more smoothly. Splurge if you want the laser head, smoother steering and a sleeker build; save if you want the strongest cleaning and an auto-empty base for less.

TechRadar rated it 4 out of 5 and Homes & Gardens 4.5. It senses dirt, floor type and room edges and raises suction to match, and its auto-empty base means you rarely touch the bin. TechRadar's verdict: "The suction power and features more than justify the price." Compared with the V15, its weight sits lower, in the wand and floorhead, but it's heavier overall and "Not as maneuverable as a Dyson"; it has headlights instead of a dust-revealing laser. Homes & Gardens found reverse pickup "not quite as strong as advertised."

TechRadar rated it 3.5 out of 5 for its "strong performance on hard floors, nippy maneuvering and excellent edge cleaning," but found "Fine dust is a challenge on carpets" and hair tangling around the roller. Homes & Gardens gave it 4 stars and listed "No hair wrap" as a pro, so the testers disagree on tangling; its cons include "Weak performance with large debris on hard floors." There's no auto suction, dirt sensing or laser head, which are the features the V15 is built around.

Dyson V15 Detect or Shark PowerDetect?
TechRadar's former Homes Editor, who owns a V15, says the Shark PowerDetect Cordless "offers the best outright cleaning performance of any vacuum I've used, including all the Dyson models," and arguably better value. She still prefers the V15 for its laser head, more precise Auto mode and smoother steering. The Shark adds an auto-empty base and costs less.
How long does a Dyson V15 Detect last?
No outlet has measured it. TechRadar's editor reports hers is "still going strong after just under two years," with no drop in cleaning. The battery is removable, so it can be replaced.
