Why
America's Test Kitchen rated the Silvia Recommended with reservations. It "produces excellent espresso for those willing to work to dial in their ideal shot," and ATK loved its powerful steam wand, but "we had to wait a long time for its boiler to heat up or between brewing and steaming milk," its portafilter fits too tightly, and its shallow drip tray spills. It has no grinder, and "the minimalist manual is skimpy." ATK's top two picks matched its full marks for coffee quality, rated higher for ease of use and cleanup, and cost less: the Breville Barista Express, which has a built-in grinder, and the Bambino Plus, which heats up in 3 seconds. The Silvia makes sense mainly for tinkerers who want to modify their machine.
