Why
America's Test Kitchen's winning lightweight Dutch oven earned full marks: "This reliable pot performed almost as well as a traditional cast-iron Dutch oven," searing meat evenly on a broad 10-inch surface with low, easy-to-reach sides. ATK's Best Buy, the Tramontina 6-quart tri-ply pot, matched it for cooking and durability at about a third of the price, but "Its cooking surface is 2 inches smaller than that of our winner, so it took more batches (and more time) to sear food." Splurge if you sear a lot of meat and want fewer batches; save if you mostly make soups, stews and rice.

From 1 tester: America's Test Kitchen
America's Test Kitchen's Best Buy lightweight Dutch oven, with the same full marks for cooking and durability as the All-Clad. Its tri-ply build "led to a great sear on meat and beautifully cooked rice," and ATK liked "its large, secure handles and tight-fitting lid." The drawback is a narrower, taller pot: "Its cooking surface is 2 inches smaller than that of our winner," so searing takes more batches. It scored 2 of 3 for ease of use.
