Why
TechGearLab named it the Best Enameled cast iron skillet, 81 of 100: "For everyday stovetop cooking, this is a beautiful enameled cast iron skillet that defines heirloom-quality craftsmanship." Of the enameled pans it tested, this one cooked best, "cooking the most consistent medium rare steak in our searing test," and its enamel never needs seasoning. But the plain Lodge 10.25-inch skillet scored 82, TechGearLab's Best Overall, for a fraction of the price: it rated higher for cooking performance (9.0 vs 8.0) and craftsmanship (10 vs 9.0), and after weeks of use it fried an egg more cleanly than the enameled pans. The Le Creuset's listed cons: "Not able to cook on low heat, design lacks versatility, very expensive." Splurge if you want a pan that never needs seasoning and can take acidic sauces; save if you're willing to season and oil a pan.
Cheaper alternatives, scored against the Le Creuset

From 1 tester: TechGearLab
TechGearLab's Best Overall cast iron skillet: "This classic skillet is everything we want out of a cast iron in terms of versatility and durability." It had one of the best sears in the test and the best cornbread, and it holds more than the Le Creuset (2.3 quarts vs 1.9). The trade-off is upkeep: bare cast iron needs seasoning, and TechGearLab notes that acidic sauces can damage that seasoning. Its cons: "Would benefit from a longer handle, relatively shallow sidewalls." It weighs slightly more than the Le Creuset (5.97 lb vs 5.38).
