Why
America's Test Kitchen rates the Artisan Recommended but says it costs more than its Classic sibling "for roughly equivalent size and performance": it's sold as 5 quarts, but its actual capacity is 3 quarts vs the Classic's 3.25. The Classic is ATK's Best Mid-Priced Mixer. You're paying for the bowl handle, splash guard and color choices.

Classic Series 4.5 Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer, White
Average of 2 testers: America's Test Kitchen 10 · Prudent Reviews 10
From 1 tester: America's Test Kitchen
America's Test Kitchen's Best Mid-Priced Mixer: its "across-the-board performance knocked out many competitors that were bigger and much more costly," from "billowy egg whites" to a double batch of pizza dough. Downsides: no bowl handle, coated rather than stainless mixing tools, and its "tilt head broke on an extreme abuse test." (The Artisan rocked and got very warm in abuse testing but completed all 12 extra batches of dough.)

America's Test Kitchen rated it Recommended with Reservations: it "performed remarkably well at a comparatively low price," whipping "satiny, cloudlike egg whites" and doing a "decent" job on cookies, cake and dough with some scraping. But "it does not seem overly durable": the tilt-head button stopped working well by the end of testing, and the housing is plastic.

Common questions
What's the difference between the KitchenAid Artisan and Classic?
America's Test Kitchen found them roughly equivalent in size and performance: the Artisan's actual capacity is 3 quarts and the Classic's is 3.25. The Artisan adds a bowl handle, a splash guard and more color options. In abuse testing, the Classic's tilt head broke, while the Artisan rocked and got very warm but completed all 12 extra batches of dough.
Can a KitchenAid stand mixer knead bread dough?
Yes, but KitchenAid says not to exceed speed 2 with the dough hook. America's Test Kitchen got good results at speed 2, though it took significantly longer than on mixers without speed restrictions.
